About the house

A sukiya-style house.
One night of doing nothing.

The pillars, floors and ceilings are all hinoki cypress.

My favourite place is the veranda. First thing in the morning, when the light catches the pine needles. In the evening, when the breeze passes through. While you sit here with tea, the children can go down and play in the garden. It is a house for a day with nothing planned.

Wanico is a guesthouse in Hishio-no-Sato, in the Noma district of Shodoshima, Kagawa. There are two ways to stay: rent the whole sukiya-style, all-cypress Hanare (detached house), or take the women-only tatami room on the second floor of the main house. Both include breakfast (for the Hanare, breakfast for two is included; extra portions are charged).

I live on the second floor of the main house. My mother lives on the first floor. If you need anything, just call out.

About the host

About the host

I run this guesthouse on my own. I live upstairs in the main house on the same grounds, and I handle everything from the port pick-up to the meals.

I hold a chef's licence and used to teach at Tsuji Cooking School. Meals here are served under the café "nico", licensed by the public health office. I also run a calligraphy class (I hold a high-school teaching licence in art and calligraphy) and ran a hair salon for 17 years.

About the name

The 和 in Wanico is read "nico". It comes from the old word nikoshi, the root of nikoyaka and nikkori — "smiling". One meeting, one chance; I want every guest to leave smiling. That is the name.

Layout: The whole sukiya-style, all-cypress Hanare is yours — living-dining room (16 tatami mats), bedroom (6 mats), massage-chair room (3.8 mats), bath, toilet, veranda and garden. Nothing is shared with the host.

Capacity: Up to 4 adults; no limit on the number of children — two beds in the bedroom, two futon sets in the living room, one child's futon. Larger families, please ask.

Consecutive nights: ¥5,000 off per night from the second night

Breakfast: Two portions included. From the third adult: ¥1,000 per person

Children (up to junior-high age): First child free, ¥500 each from the second

From the third guest: No extra room charge. Amenities are provided for up to 4.

Opening days, check-in, ID, payment, cancellation and restrictions. By booking, you agree to the following.

Opening days: As a licensed minpaku we may operate a limited number of days per year (180). Please ask whether your dates are available.

Check-in: Timed to your ferry (we meet you at the port — tell us which sailing).

ID: When we hand over the key, the lead guest is asked to show photo ID.

Check-out: 10:00 the next morning

Payment: All prices include tax. Airbnb bookings are paid by card. Direct bookings are confirmed by enquiry → availability reply → bank transfer to Japan Post Bank (by 3 days before your stay). Transfer fees are paid by the guest. Dinner and drinks are paid on the day, in person (PayPay accepted).

Cancellation: Free up to 3 days before / 50% from 2 days before / 100% same day or no-show

I cook the meals myself. I hold a chef's licence and taught at Tsuji Cooking School. If I'm going to have people stay in my house, I want to show them the kitchen too. Meals are served as the café "nico", licensed by the public health office.

Breakfast is included with both ways of staying. Dinner is by reservation, with four menus to choose from — Seto Inland Sea fish and island olive beef. Everyone in your party chooses the same menu (we can't cook a different menu per person).

You can eat in your room or in the Japanese-style café "nico". The café has a modern irori hearth (currently under construction). Please order drinks when you reserve your meal.

Tell us about allergies and what your children will eat when you book. On some days we can't take dinner reservations because of preparation. Meals are paid on the day, in person (PayPay accepted).

Free · 40–50 min — The hill behind the house. It is No. 2 of the Shodoshima 88 pilgrimage and the inner sanctuary of No. 8, Jōkō-ji. My favourite place on the island. I'll walk you up to watch the sun set over the Seto Inland Sea. Please reserve when you book.

Calligraphy lesson

1 hour · ¥3,000 — I hold a high-school teaching licence in calligraphy. First-timers and children welcome.

Yukata hire and dressing

¥5,000 — Sit on the veranda or walk through Hishio-no-Sato in a yukata.

¥3,000 — Ten years of readings. If there is something you'd like to ask along the way.

Getting Here

By ferry,
to the island.

There is no bridge to Shodoshima. Bring your car on the ferry, or we'll meet you at the port. The house is in Hishio-no-Sato, the soy-sauce-brewery district in the island's south-east.

From Kobe — Sakate Port

Kobe (Sannomiya) → Sakate (Jumbo Ferry, about 3 h 20 min). About 8 minutes by car from Sakate to the house — the nearest port.

From Takamatsu — Ikeda Port

Takamatsu → Ikeda (Kokusai Ryobi Ferry, about 60 min). About 15 minutes by car from Ikeda.

From Himeji — Fukuda Port

Himeji → Fukuda (about 1 h 40 min). About 25 minutes by car from Fukuda.

From Okayama / Takamatsu (high-speed boat) — Tonosho Port

Shin-Okayama → Tonosho (about 70 min). Takamatsu → Tonosho (high-speed boat about 35 min · ferry about 60 min). About 35 minutes by car from Tonosho.

The Takamatsu–Kusakabe service stopped in 2021. Car ferries may need a reservation, so book early for holiday weekends. If you come without a car, we'll meet you at the port, and you can borrow the electric bicycle.

    Restaurants and izakaya in Kusakabe, Yasuda and Ikeda. Many close early, so it's safest to shop before you arrive.

Is the Hanare entirely private? Is anything shared with the host?

Nothing is shared with the host. The host lives on the second floor of the main house on the same grounds, and the host's mother on the first floor.

How much is a night with breakfast?

The Hanare is ¥50,000 a night (tax included). The price is the same for up to 4 adults, and any number of children may stay. Breakfast for two is included; from the third adult it's ¥1,000 per person. Children (up to junior-high age): first child free, ¥500 each from the second. Consecutive nights are ¥5,000 off per night from the second night.

The women-only tatami room on the second floor of the main house is ¥15,000 per person with breakfast (¥30,000 for two; capacity 2, a third guest by arrangement). This is the opening rate for stays up to 31 December 2026; from 2027 it is ¥20,000 per person. Consecutive nights are ¥5,000 off per night from the second night.

Can a woman travelling alone stay on Shodoshima?

Yes. The 8-mat tatami room on the second floor of the main house is for women only, and the host — a woman — lives on the same floor. The living room, kitchen, bath and toilet are shared with the host, and you're welcome to use the kitchen. Port pick-up and breakfast are included. Dinner is by reservation (extra charge), cooked by the host.

Can we bring children?

Yes. The Hanare suits families: two beds in the bedroom, plus two futon sets and one child's futon in the living room (up to 4 adults; any number of children). Children's breakfast (up to junior-high age): first child free, ¥500 each from the second. Tell us about allergies and what your children will eat when you book.

Can a men-only group stay?

We do not accept men-only stays for the Hanare. The tatami room in the main house is for women only.
